Pendapat Publik Mengenai Peranan Media dalam Menangani Jenayah Public Opinion on the Role of the Media in Tackling Crime

Abstract

This study aims to determine public’s view of the role of mass media in exposing snatch-theft crime in Kuala Lumpur. Apart from that, this study also surveys public perception of the role of mass media in helping the Malaysian police force, Polis Diraja Malaysia (PDRM), in reducing snatch-theft. A total of 390 female respondents in Kuala Lumpur were randomly chosen as a study sample. Questionnaires were given to them to obtain data for the study. Results obtained reveal that the mass media was important for women of Kuala Lumpur to obtain news on snatch-theft. Majority of them felt that news reports in the mass media were true. The respondents strongly agreed that coverage by the mass media on snatch-theft helped make them aware of the crime. In addition, they agreed that the mass media has helped PDRM in reducing the crime in Kuala Lumpur.


Kajian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pandangan masyarakat mengenai peranan media massa dalam mendedahkan jenayah ragut di Kuala Lumpur. Selain daripada itu, kajian ini juga meninjau persepsi masyarakat mengenai peranan media massa dalam membantu pasukan polis Malaysia, Polis Diraja Malaysia (PDRM), dalam mengurangkan kejadian ragut. Sebanyak 390 responden wanita di Kuala Lumpur dipilih secara rawak sebagai sampel kajian. Kuesioner diberikan kepada mereka untuk mendapatkan data untuk penelitian ini. Hasil yang diperoleh menunjukkan bahawa media massa penting bagi wanita Kuala Lumpur untuk mendapatkan berita mengenai kejadian ragut. Sebahagian besar dari mereka merasakan bahawa laporan berita di media massa adalah benar. Responden sangat setuju bahawa liputan oleh media massa mengenai kecurian rampasan membantu menyedarkan mereka tentang jenayah tersebut. Di samping itu, mereka bersetuju bahawa media massa telah membantu PDRM dalam mengurangkan jenayah di Kuala Lumpur.
