Publisher's Perspective on Critical Issues in the Preparation and Supply of School Textbooks in Malaysia

Abstract

Textbook publishing in Malaysia is generally a lucrative business and publishers are competing among themselves to secure government contracts to provide books for a captive market in the public schools. The process for approval, however, is very competitive and publishers are subject to various regulations, procedures and guidelines. This paper, through a large focus group, identifies and explains some of the major isues and challenges of textbook publishing from the publishers perspectives.

Penerbitan buku teks di Malaysia umumnya merupakan perniagaan yang menguntungkan dan penerbit bersaing untuk mendapatkan kontrak kerajaan untuk menyediakan buku untuk pasaran tertentu di sekolah-sekolah awam. Proses persetujuan, bagaimanapun, sangat kompetitif dan penerbit tunduk pada pelbagai peraturan, prosedur dan panduan. Makalah ini, melalui kumpulan fokus yang besar, mengenal pasti dan menjelaskan beberapa isu dan cabaran utama penerbitan buku teks dari perspektif penerbit.
