Abstract

The Malay community in Kelantan is well known for its rich traditions and inherited system of traditional beliefs that have been passed down through generations. These beliefs are not merely a form of cultural heritage; rather, they play a significant role in shaping the social identity, moral values, and collective consciousness of the local community. Among the main elements of these traditional beliefs are traditional medicine, taboos, and marriage customs, all of which embody spiritual values and worldviews that reflect the community’s relationship with the unseen realm and belief in supernatural forces. For instance, traditional healing practices often combine Islamic elements with animistic beliefs, while taboos and customary practices function to regulate behavior and maintain social harmony. Therefore, these beliefs need to be examined from a religious perspective to determine the extent to which they align with or contradict Islamic principles. This study adopts a qualitative approach through document analysis and literature review, aiming to explain the relationship between traditional beliefs and religion. The findings indicate that traditional beliefs in Kelantan represent a mixture of religious practices and Malay traditional beliefs that deviate from Islamic teachings, revealing the presence of certain conceptual inconsistencies. Consequently, there is a need for efforts toward purification and alignment with authentic Islamic teachings.
